ABOUT THIS EVENT

Glen Canyon Institute, in collaboration with Crow Canyon Archaeological Center, presents What the River Knows, a Good Intentions Paving Co. documentary exploring the reemergence of Glen Canyon from the receding waters of Lake Powell reservoir. As the West faces the urgent need to redesign water management, we are offered the chance to restore one of the planet’s most stunning landscapes. What the River Knows explores this unique reflection point in a centuries-long history, weaving together past and present to reveal a new way forward for the Colorado River.

The evening will open with Glen Canyon Rises, a documentary short from Crow Canyon Archeological Center featuring Hopi archaeologist Lyle Balenquah and author Craig Childs. This powerful visual and narrative experience reveals layers of human history embedded in the landscape. As water levels fall, generations of cultural footprints are revealed, and dormant ecological systems begin to stir once more.

Following the film screening, the event will conclude with a panel discussion and audience Q+A.

This New Mexico PBS documentary is narrated by New Mexico resident and Oscar winner Wes Studi. Producer Pamela Pierce says the documentary tells the little-known story of the New Mexico pueblo resistance against colonization beginning in 1540. Follow this link to PBS special programming: https://www.pbs.org/video/no-greater-act-pueblo-resistance-6blfl7/

The documentary is narrated by New Mexico resident and Oscar winner Wes Studi. Pierce says the documentary tells the little-known story of the New Mexico pueblo resistance against colonization beginning in 1540. “This is not a history of pueblos, or the Pueblo Revolt, but a history of early resistance,” Pierce says. “The film explores the birth of resistance, a response to conflict that America still needs to employ.”

Pierce wanted to deep dive into the part of history that hasn’t been told to the extent of the Pueblo Revolt of 1680, which was an uprising of the Pueblo people against Spanish colonization. The uprising was organized by Tewa leader Po’Pay and aimed to resist Spanish religious, economic and political oppression, ultimately leading to the temporary overthrow of Spanish rule for 12 years.

Pierce says the conflict and survival of the Pueblo people from the 1540s to 1696 is relevant to modern sovereignty. “The period of time defines a people,” Pierce says. “More than a Pueblo history, it focuses on events driven by the resistance to colonization by sovereign Pueblo nations — the story of courage and perseverance in the face of nation-building and colonization by European governments.”

The next SJBAS monthly meeting will be held on Wednesday, February 11th, beginning at 7:00 PM. The meeting will be in person in the Lyceum of the Center of Southwest Studies (CSWS) at Fort Lewis College (FLC). A Zoom broadcast of the live presentation will be available.

After a brief business meeting, Jacob Sedig, PhD, will present New Data, Old Questions: Ancient DNA and the Archaeology of Northwest Mexico and the U.S. Southwest. A reception will start things off at 6:30 PM in the CSWS foyer.

Recent ancient DNA research in northern Mexico and the U.S. Southwest has produced data from hundreds of individuals across wide geographic and time spans, offering powerful new insights into long-standing archaeological questions. These studies are reshaping our understanding of how ancient communities interacted, moved, and lived. In this presentation, Dr. Sedig will review these findings and discuss how the rapidly growing ancient DNA record is transforming our understanding of the Greater Southwest and Northwest Mexico.

Jakob Sedig earned his PhD in Anthropology from the University of Colorado, where his research focused on the archaeology of the U.S. Southwest. His work has addressed both long-standing archaeological questions and emerging applications of ancient DNA, including refining radiocarbon chronologies, while also emphasizing ethical engagement and collaboration with Indigenous communities. Dr. Sedig is currently a Senior Archaeologist with Chronicle Heritage and serves as a Principal Investigator for the firm’s Phoenix and Albuquerque offices. Check the recently revamped SJBAS website here for further information.

Other items of interest:
Check out the CSWS website by clicking here. The CSWS currently has a major exhibition named Constellations of Place that runs through December 18th. This exhibition is rooted in the landscapes and layered histories of Southwest Colorado. Guest curated by scholar, writer, and independent curator, Dr. Meranda Roberts (Yerington Paiute, Chicana), Constellations of Place features a selection of over 60 textiles, pottery, beadwork, 2D works, and mixed media pieces from the Center’s permanent collections alongside the work of 13 invited contemporary Native American, Indigenous, and Latinx artists. The exhibition has recently been featured in the Southern Ute Drum, Durango Local News, FLC News and the Durango Herald.

The CSWS has several online exhibits that feature Southwestern postcards, Uranium Fever: Uranium Mining, Culture Health and the Environment in the Four Corners Region, and an exhibit catalog named As Seeds, We Grow: Student Reflections on Resilience.
