Santa Fe Pueblo IV Sites
The
"headquarters" for this field trip to Santa Fe will be the La Quinta
(on Cerillos Road near the Villa Linda Mall). The rates quoted range from
$61 - $71 per night; these are the senior or AAA rates.
On
Thursday, May 22, we will meet our guide, Paul Williams, archaeologist for the
BLM, at 9:00 A.M. at the Villa Linda Mall, near the Mervyns entrance. He
will be in a State vehicle and since he is over 6' tall, can probably be
recognized in a crowd. Although there is plenty of parking at the La
Cieneguila petroglyph site, it would be a good idea to carpool. Please
bring sunscreen, a hat, good hiking boots, your lunch and plenty of water,
since this will be an all day affair. We will probably be back to the
motel by 3-3:30 - plenty of time for a happy hour before going off to dinner at
an establishment of your choice.
On
Friday, May 23, we are expected at Pecos Monument at 9:30 A.M. for the ruins
tour. Again, bring everything mentioned above for the first day.
The afternoon tour will be to some of the 12 pueblos (I don't think we
will be seeing all of them), and there is a $2 fee per person. We will
probably be back to Santa Fe by around 3-4 P.M.
On
Saturday, May 24, we will be meeting with David Eck, archaeologist for the
State Land Office, at 9:00 A.M. at the convenience store/gas station just past
the Cochiti Reservoir Visitors Center. Carpooling would be a good idea,
and Mr. Eck suggested high clearance vehicles for the tour of Kuapa. Same
equipment as on the previous day: hat, water, sunscreen, lunch, and hiking
boots. We will probably be back in Santa Fe by 5 P.M.
If
you are not staying at the La Quinta, please meet the group at the above
locations and be punctual! We have arranged for these special guided tours
and it is discourteous to keep our guides waiting for some stragglers who
couldn't get out of bed!
